Designer Vaginas

Having had three patients this week who had cosmetic work done “down there”, I decided it was time to blog about it.
In my 17 years as a nurse in Beverly Hills, labiaplasty was always a procedure that was performed, but not as frequent, and in a much more hush-hush manner. Women did not talk about it as openly as they do now.
Why is that? Every day I see a new story about Designer Vaginas…and it becoming more and more popular. Women talk about it as freely as getting a new pair of shoes. On the reality show, “Plastic Wives”, one ex-wife of a plastic surgeon proudly held up her left over labia in a specimen cup for all the world to see.
Originally sought after by porn stars who wanted the aesthetically perfect, younger looking nether-region, today women of all ages, single, married, and divorced are asking for a little “snip- snip” as my patient this week put it.
One patient this week added it to her Mommy Makeover with a breast augmentation and tummy tuck. She had had two pregnancies and wanted to feel better about herself and for her husband.
Another lady was a happily married 55 year old…which shows that age does not matter.
Remember, I am referring to labiaplasty, which is the shortening of the labial lips. Vaginal tightening entails actual suturing or lasering of the inside of the vagina to make it tighter…which is a different procedure. Labiaplasty is usually done for purely aesthetic reasons…unless there is discomfort in clothing, etc. Vaginal tightening and labiaplasty can also be done together.
The actual procedure itself takes about an hour under general anesthesia. It is fairly straight forward, virtually painless, and the patient heals quickly. This should be done by either a Plastic Surgeon or an Ob-Gyn with experience in this area.
Other options that are being done to enhance sexual satisfaction are a few in- office procedures. Some patients choose to try Hyaluronic acid (same thing as Restylane and Juvederm). This is injected into the G-Spot to make it bigger and more responsive. Another option recently introduced is the O-Shot (Recently on The Doctors Show) using your own body’s PRP to enhance sexual function and sensitivity. Also, this can be used in female urinary incontinence.
Remember, having labiaplasty or any of the above stated procedures does not change any function that happens during sex. However, it makes women feel more confident, which leads to a better sex life.
